Project title: Learning About Forest Time Duration: 2009-2010 Funding Agency: FEE Amount of Resources: £ 500 Learning About Forests is a programme that wishes to enable pupils and teachers to practically experience being in the forest, relate their experience in the forest and being and the knowledge that teachers impart to pupils in the classroom and by understanding this it will be an important prerequisite for both teachers and pupils to understand forests, develop an awareness of forest and also respect the forests which will have an influence on future choices and actions especially to this younger generation. Currently environmental management in many countries in general and Tanzania particular is the key issue which needs attention from grassroots to the national levels. Urbanization and modernity have made people far from forests. The environment is destructed greatly than it is conserved; a number of trees deforested is not similar to that afforested. Health problems have increased. Untreated waste is left freely for children to play on which has increased the danger to them and at this juncture children are the most affected compared to adults. This gives rise to the need to build a culture on environmental conservation from the grassroots level that this project wishes to establish. School children are the focus, thus this project will give them awareness that they will transmit to other pupils who are not in schools and the community at large Project title: Human rights and Business Time Duration: 2009 Funding Agency: Aim for Human Rights Amount of Resources: £ 2600 As part of human rights protection, Envirocare has enhanced and promote workers rights through various previous projects. Thus, we see a need to create awareness to the company of the importance of the trajectory tool so that company can conduct their own assessment and see if they comply with the tool. Project Title: Vocational Training for orphans and vulnerable children in Mufindi District. Time duration: 2007-2009 Funding Agency: RFE Amount of resources: TShs 258,163,500/=Tsh This project is a replication of the experiences gained in the previous project on Vocational Training for Orphans and vulnerable Children in Musoma, Mara Region. Envirocare believes that vocational training programmes contributes greatly to long-term self-sufficiency of orphans and vulnerable children, as the trainees will be able to engage themselves in productive employment. As one of the strategies to deal with this problem, Envirocare through the support of the Rapid Funding Envelope for HIV/AIDS is implementing a one-year project on Vocational Training for HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children in Mufindi. Over 200 orphans and vulnerable children between 15 and 25 years old (both girls and boys) are benefiting from the programme. The aim is to train the orphans and vulnerable children in entrepreneurship skills. Mafinga Lutheran Training Centre is providing training on tailoring, masonry and brick lying and carpentry. SIDO – Iringa is providing training on Food Processing, Tie & Dye and (batik) making, Soap Bar Making and Chalk Stick Making. The institutions are also providing technical advice to Envirocare on the type of equipment and raw materials to support the orphans and vulnerable children for them to engage in income generating activities. In addition to that SIDO-Iringa is providing training on group dynamics and entrepreneurship with a bearing on how to generate business idea, how to start, manage and improve their businesses. Project Title: Preventing and Reducing Effects of Toxic Industrial Chemicals and Promoting Safer Management in Tanzania Time duration: 2007 Funding Agency: SSNCA Amount of resources: TShs 8,400,000/=Tsh This project is among many projects undertaken by Envirocare within the framework of its strategic plan 2007 – 2011 particularly on Key Result Areas (KRA) namely Action Research. This is one of the major strategies through which Envirocare carries out its mission. The rationale of carrying out this project is simply because Tanzania is a signatory to the international agreements on industrial chemicals safety, but is far from implementation of the same. Management of toxic industrial chemicals is poor and therefore needs improvement. Consumers, industrial workers and public at large are not aware of their rights to be protected from being affected by toxic chemicals. This is a nine month project, mainly focusing on awareness raising on managing toxic industrial chemicals in Tanzania. It is in the final stages. Baseline study on the status of chemical industry in Tanzania has been conducted. Depth analysis of chemical industries has been on tanneries and textiles. The identified industries are located in Dar es Salaam, Coast, Morogoro and Kilimanjaro regions. The target groups have been industrial workers, community living around industrial areas and consumers. The stakeholders are government officials or institutions and local industrial owners. Media group is responsible for disseminating the information on toxic hazards through various ways. The data of the study now available and the findings already disseminated to the relevant authorities and stakeholders through the workshop. Educational materials already produced to enhance awareness raising and are being disseminated to the industrial workers, consumers and the general public. Coordination and collaboration on issues related to toxic industrial management in Tanzania is weak. The project will bring together the industrial chemical stakeholders so as to network among themselves. Gender and HIV/AIDS issues have been mainstreamed in the project in order to minimize risks on HIV infections and gender discrimination. For the purpose of this report, result analysis of the project has been given only for those activities already implemented up to December, 2007. Others activities will be reported and analyzed in 2008 annual report. Project title: Promoting good governance in forest management for sustainable livelihood improvement in Kilindi district. Time duration: 2007 Funding Agency: FAO Amount of resources:USD $20,000 Envirocare, through support of the National Forest Programme Facility (NFPF) under FAO, implemented a six month project on Promoting Good Governance in Forest Management for Sustainable Livelihood Improvement in Kilindi District. The project aimed at building capacity in forest governance that facilitate and promote sustainable and equitable forest conservation and management, identify and promote policy, legal, institutional and economic arrangements that contribute to improved forest governance, promote and consolidate equal gender participation in forest decision making and promote and strengthen transparency in allocation and use of forest resources. Project stakeholders, beneficiaries and target groups included forest user groups, women’s groups, cultivators and pastoralists in Bokwa, Songe, Vilindwa and Kwamba villages and the local government officials. The main activities of the project for the reporting period were the identification of environmental problems and causes of environmental degradation in Mount Bokwa forest and proposed solutions to their in Songe, Bokwa, Kwamba and Vilindwa villages. It looked into creating awareness to Songe – Bokwa communities on Forest Policies and Laws, the National Land Policy, Village Land Act, monitoring of Mount Bokwa ecosystem by the local communities and local government authorities and improve the ability of local community to carry out participatory village land use planning in areas surrounding Mount Bokwa forest. The project also supported the beneficiaries to make by laws and short and long term management plans for Mount Bokwa forest, support income generating activities to Tumaini, Ujamaa, Mshikamano and Kiegeya groups with 64 local chickens, tree nursery establishment materials, 30 beehives, vegetable seeds, treadle pump and machine to make energy saving stoves. Project Title: Mainstreaming No Patent on Life in the GE campaign in Tanzania Time duration: 2007 Funding Agency: Miseroor Amount of resources:USD $6,000 No Patent on Life is a new phenomenon in Tanzania. In 2007, Envirocare received financial support from Miserior of Germany to implement a six month project on Mainstreaming No Patent on Life in Tanzania. The project aimed at setting into action grassroots farmer organizations and key stakeholders in protecting their heritage, their culture, their knowledge and their rights towards food security, seed saving and improved livelihood. The project targeted key stakeholders who were grass-roots farmers drawn from farmer organizations and groups. The main project activities involved preparation and producing awareness raising materials of which 700 copies of brochures on patenting life form were produced and disseminated, organised a three days national workshop to introduce the concept of NPOL and develop a clear strategy on mainstreaming no patent on life. The participants were made aware on our lost biological resources which included local seed and how to recover them. Farmers were therefore encouraged to grow local seed varieties which are on the verge of extinction; they were empowered to say no to GMOs seed and no to biopiracy and making them aware of their rights. Project Title: Campaign on GE Free Zone and Promotion of Farmers’ Variety/Land Race Seed in Tanzania Time duration: 2007 Funding Agency: ABN Amount of resources:EURO 5,500 This was a one year project which ran from January to December 2007. The objectives of this project were to analyse and determine the adequacy and comprehensiveness of NBF addressing concerns related to health, environment and access to productive resources for the poor, to support awareness creation on GMOs and GE free zone, to enhance community initiatives on conservation of local seed and to develop capacity of Envirocare for resource mobilization to implement her activities. Project stakeholders, beneficiaries and target groups included farmers groups who conserve local seed, like minded organization. The main project activities were implemented which included preparing 500 copies of seed brochures on campaign on seed diversity and GMOs free zones, translated into Kiswahili so as to make it easier for everyone to read and understand. For continued good working relationship with different stakeholders, Envirocare staff was invited to facilitate the workshop on understating GMOs organized by PELUM Tanzania in Arusha. Also, Envirocare collaborated with Ileje Rural Development Organisation (IRDO) to promote local seed. This included awareness creation on promoting local seed for food security, identification of local seed varieties of maize:- Lokolo, Njelenjele, Mofati, Sokosela, Bandawe, chancha; Beans:- Nambise, Kwati, Mwasipenjile, Ndondo, Nanzungwa, katiyetiye, nashikupukupu; Ground nuts: Mashavara, Kambani, Mayowa, Boma and Baka. Other activities were awareness raising on seed multiplication. One remarkable activity implemented under seed security is to construct one building for which will be used as a seed bank. This local seed bank will be used by the villagers of Msia, Ilulu, Shinji and Ikumbilo/Chitete. The bank has capacity to store up to 200 bags of seed. The seed center will also be used as a training center for farmers on seed management. Project Title: Community Ecological Governance - Local community and management of natural resources in Tanzania Time duration: 2007 Funding Agency: ABN Amount of resources:EURO 5000 The concept of community ecological governance, or ecological democracy, is relatively new, but presents a powerful approach for resisting the destructive forces of globalization. Ecological governance involves returning to cultural knowledge and practices that enhance equity and ecological regeneration and ensuring legal opportunities that support such a process. Ecological governance is about democracy and community, about the natural world that sustains us and in which we exist and interact. In 2007 Envirocare in partnership with Africa Biodiversity Network (ABN) continued implementing the CEG project at Ngasini which aimed at raising awareness on community rights in managing local natural resources so as to empower them to decide on how best should their natural resources managed. The main project activities involved putting boundaries of the traditionally protected forests of Nguateni, Mkomboni and Ngasini so as to prevent encroachment by the adjacent communities, documentary on the conservation of traditionally protected forests of Ngasini, Mkombonyi and Ngwatenyi, establish tree nursery of 7270 tree seedlings at Ngasinyi. Envirocare supported the community with grivelia robusta seed, polythene tubes, spade and watering can while the beneficiaries provided labour force, planted and distributed tree seedlings at Mkomboni, Ngasini, Nguateni forests and at Nkweseko, Nkwarungo, Nkomwasi, Nkwawangya, Mawala primary schools and to community members according to their request, Project title:Promoting Production and Marketing Opportunities for Organic Agricultural Products in Tanzania Time duration 2007-2008 Funding Agency:HIVOS Amount of resources. This project has increased awareness on organic farming to coffee growers as well as milk producers in Kilimanjaro region. Men have realized the importance of involving women in decision making and working together. The farmers have started planting botanicals and manure ready for starting organic coffee farming. The organic sector is now growing in Tanzania. Farmers and consumers are interested in organic products. The political will to support the process is still very little. However, CSOs and private companies are pushing the government to put in place a good policy to support the organic sector. The potential of this sector to support rural livelihood and environment is immense. More awareness rising is required at all levels. Project Title: Cultural biodiversity: - Strengthening traditional agriculture for primary schools in Kilimanjaro Time duration: 2007 Funding Agency: ABN Amount of resources:EURO 2500 In 2007, Envirocare in partnership with ABN continued implementation of the cultural biodiversity project on strengthening traditional agriculture for primary schools in Kilimanjaro Region. The project aimed at raising awareness on traditional ecological in agriculture in primary schools, contribute to the revival of intergenerational learning, and promote conservation of local seeds.
The main project activities were: - strengthen the cultural biodiversity clubs of Nkweseko and Nkwawangya, formation of 2 new cultural biodiversity clubs at Nkwamwasi and Nkwarungo primary schools with 25 pupils each, establish a demonstration plot of local food crops at Nkweseko primary school, establish tree nurseries at Nkwarungo and Nkwamwasi primary schools, organised meeting for pupils and elders on story telling, poems, proverbs and riddle (Mr. Stephano the old and wise man was invited at Nkweseko Primary schools to tell stories to pupils), construction of 2 traditional Chagga huts at Nkweseko and Nkwawangya primary schools, organised cultural biodiversity celebration which was participated by 144 pupils and 110 elders. During the celebration traditional dance, story telling, proverbs, riddles, songs and poems were done. Also, documentary of cultural celebration and tree planting were done. Project Title: The Socio-economic and environmental impacts of biofuels industry in Tanzania Time duration: 2007 Funding Agency: ABN Amount of resources: EURO 1500 In 2007, Envirocare in partnership with ABN carried out a study on the socio-economic and environmental impacts of biofuels in Tanzania. The study aimed at critically investigating the socio-economic as well as the environmental impacts of introducing biofuels industry in Tanzania. Study was carried out in 6 regions in the agro- ecological zones which are Dar es Salaam and Tanga in Coast zone, Morogoro in Semi-arid lands, Kilimanjaro and Arusha in Northern highlands and Kigoma in Western Highlands. The study found that Tanzania had 55.2 Mha potential area for rain fed crop production from the total land area of 93.8 Mha. 10.8 million ha, or 24.5 percent of this arable land is under cultivation leaving 44.4 Mha of arable land, (equivalent to 42% of total land area) for food and non-food crop production. The huge piece of land that is underutilized is attracting biofuels investors. The study also found that biofuels introduction especially the large scale one would have an impact on food security, biodiversity conservation, land use and territory and livelihoods of small holder farmers and indigenous communities in Tanzania. The government is evidently committed to fast-tracking biofuels initiatives and switching over vast areas of land to sugar cane, palm and Jatropha. The most fertile lands, with best access to water are being targeted, even though these lands are already used for food production by small-scale farmers. Any talk of biofuels production for local energy consumption is undermined by the obvious intent of international investors to target foreign markets, where rising global oil prices will determine high prices for biofuels. Project Title: Strategic Planning and Networking Time Duration: 2006 Funding Agency: MS Tanzania Amount of Resources: TShs 25.000.000/= Envirocare has collaborated with MS for a few years by participating in meetings, and the last year with funding of a small project without the relationship being formalised in a partnership agreement. However, now with funding for this project of Strategic Planning and networking together with the placement of a DW and a staff member’s active participation in one of MS’ Topic Teams, Envirocare is ready to commit itself in a strengthened collaboration with MS. Conclusion Generally Civil Society is not very strong in the environmental sector. There is only little networking and despite the Local Government Reform programme providing options for funding to CSOs there is still very little if any collaboration with local government. This may be due to lack of knowledge and resistance from both LG and CS. Strategic alliances are few because of fear of competition even though a lot could be gained from it. Especially the vertical networks or linkages between international NGOs and/or large national NGOs to local networks or community groups in order to capacity build the local level are still quite under exploited. Envirocare could gain more from networking with a tighter strategic focus relating to the Strategic Plan even if it means scaling down some of the older networks. Networks have a tendency of becoming personal contacts and the challenge is to institutionalise your network for the whole organisation to learn and benefit from it. Envirocare would gain from strengthening the way benefits and progress of networking is documented. Internal information-sharing is vital when it comes to networking in order to enhance institutional memory and avoid networking contacts being only or mostly person-related. As Envirocare does not have a central server yet, some low-technology solution to this must be developed in addition to the information-sharing on staff-meetings and the minutes hereof. Presently, Envirocare is entering into new promising collaboration with environmental networks like the Informal Discussion Group on Environment (IDGE) and Tanzania Natural Resources Forum (TNRF. Project Title: Gender Responsive Awareness Raising for Sustainable Farming for Resource Poor Farmers in Kilimanjaro region. Time Duration: 2004 - November 2006. Funding Agency (HIVOS) Amount of ResourcesTShs 375,000,000/= The programme activities included awareness raising on organic farming, mobilize farmers in organic groups, training farmers on organic products production, inspection and certification, processing and marketing.
Major outputs realized include: - Conducted a baseline study to establish the level of organic products in Hai and Moshi rural districts in Kilimanjaro region. - Supported of 105 organic farmers with materials and training. The activity is still going on. - Conducted a national workshop on Organic production and Certification - Carried out several exhibitions of organic products in Moshi and Dar es Salaam - Establishment of two natural products shops, one in Moshi and another one in Dar es Salaam. - Conducted survey on status of organic products market in Tanzania. - Linking of the organic producers with buyers in Kilimanjaro and Arusha. - Production and distribution of 1000 copies of the book titled Organic farming Training Manual-Trainers Manual (Kiongozi cha Mwezeshaji wa Kilimo Hai) - Establishment of effective networking with other institutions interested in organic farming namely Export and Promotion of African Organic Products (EPOPA), Kilimo Hai Tanzania (KIHATA), Tanzania Organic Faming Organization (TOFO), Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) Lesson learnt: - There are many farmers practicing organic farming by default. - There is no policy supporting organic farming in Tanzania - There is high demand for organic products but consumers do dot know exactly how and where to get them. - Organic farmers do not receive a fair price for their products - Advertisement and promotion of organic products is still low in Tanzania. Project Title: Vocational Training for HIV/AIDS Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Musoma Time Duration: September 2005 - August 2006. Funding Agency: Rapid Funding Envelope (RFE) Amount of Resources: TShs 217,000,000/= The project intends to improve livelihoods of orphans and vulnerable children through vocational training and establishment of income generating activities in Musoma rural and urban districts in Mara region. Specifically the project intends to enhance the capacity of orphans and vulnerable children to establish and manage income-generating activities through vocational skills training, improve livelihoods of orphan-headed families by providing support of basic needs while the head of family attend trainings, create enabling environment for the orphans and vulnerable children to establish and manage business or income generating activities by providing support of equipment and raw materials for start-up projects and to facilitate establishment of self help groups for the orphans. Main outputs of the project include;- 200 orphans and vulnerable children of HIV/AIDS trained in various vocational skills, 200 orphans supported with equipments and raw materials for various income generating activities, at least 80% of the trained and supported orphans start new business or secure employment, 10 self-help group of orphans established and functioning and at least 100 orphan headed families supported. The output that surpass our expected performance is the ability of the project beneficiaries to cope with the trainings such that within a period of one month the children have been able to produce very good products especially in the area of food processing, tie and dye as well as bamboo furniture making. Additionally the condition of children in terms of health and knowledge has been improved due to the availability of food and good shelter. All the changes are attributed to by the children’s willingness and readiness to adapt to change.
